Magnificent R.A. Moog modular (60s) |
Description |
One of the five or so most important items we have ever had in VEMIA: a large R.A. Moog modular hand-made for one client in stages from 1968-1970, in excellent condition and complete working order. This wonderful instrument is being serviced and renovated by Stephen Masucci, one of the very top Moog restorers, as recommended by Dr Thomas Rhea of Moog fame.
**STOP PRESS: also included will be some extra items, just discovered:- 21 original Moog schematics from 1965 to 1969, and some hand-written notes in the hand of the original owner.**
*New photo composite now uploaded - and bigger versions of various pictures of this, before and after restoration, are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/73278691@N00/ - including a photo of the interior of one cabinet restored.*
**NB The size and value of this instrument means that proper packing will be expensive. The buyer will be responsible for the cost, unless the bid goes to £19650 or higher - in which case the seller will pay packing costs.**
It will also sound superb, with its early 901 oscillators etc., etc..
It consists of four beautiful original cabinets, a superb pair of original keyboards, and what could well be unique: a fixed-filter-bank switching device which has all the hallmarks of a Bob Moog one-off. The modules are:-
(3) 901 Voltage Controlled Oscillators
(1) 901 A Oscillator Controller
(4) 901 B Oscillators
(3) 902 Voltage Controlled Amplifiers
(1) 903 White Sound Source
(2) 904 A Voltage Controlled Low Pass Filters
(1) 904 B Voltage Controlled High Pass Filter
(1) 904 C Filter Coupler
(2) 905 Reverberation Units
(1) 905 B Scale Programmer
(1) 907 Fixed Filter Bank with in/out switch for each filter
(1) 910 Power supply circa 1974
(3) 911 Envelope Generators
(1) 911 A Dual Trigger Delay
(1) 912 Envelope Follower
(2) 950 Stacked Keyboards
(1) 960 Sequential Controller
(1) 961 Sequencer Interface
(1) 962 Sequential Switch
(1) 4 Input active line level mixer with click filter
(1) 4 Input passive line level mixer with low & high pass filters
(1) Various patch points including trunk lines and 4 sets of multiples
The last two digits of module serial numbers have been removed in the photos because the owner values his privacy.
Remember the internal photos on this site were taken before the roughly $5000 Stephen Masucci restoration. The instrument will be packed and shipped from his workshop, so this will be done by someone with much experience of shipping instruments of this size, weight, and quality (including Dr Rhea's own modular).
**Latest restoration update: now expected to be completed by Monday April 26. Because of the size of the purchase we will anyway allow the winning bidder to pay a 20% deposit and then have five extra days to complete the payment.**
**Stephen has asked us to point out the following:- Because of it's age it should be sold on an 'as is' basis with no implied warranties. There should also be a reminder that no matter how well it's packed and no matter who the shipper may be, it will certainly require some calibration touch ups when it reaches it's destination.' **
**If it is bought by someone outside the USA there may be tax / duty to pay by the importer. In the UK, for instance, there would currently be duty at around 3.2% and VAT at 17.5%.**
April 24: we have replaced the unrestored photo with a new composite, from which you can see that the panels are beautiful, all knobs are correct, everything looks stunning. Unfortunately there are no new photos of the insides, where most of the restoration work was done - so we have had to add the original internal photos to the composite. The new insides will look far better. Stephen says that several of the modules are so early they are virtually prototypes, so this makes this instrument even more historically important. Most important, it will sound wonderful and play beautifully too.
An extract from Dr Rhea's letter to Stephen Masucci after seeing photos of this restoration 25 April 2010:
'Well, another masterful restoration . . . and to reiterate what I told you (speaking as former V.P., Studio Systems Division of Moog Music),
when I first saw one of your masterful Moog 900 Series Modular synth restorations: ' . . . we never built one as well as your restoration!'
The photos of your latest effort fairly glow . . . '
The owner, who is only the second owner, will
provide provenance to the winner including information about an LP featuring this instrument that was released commercially in the early 70's.
