A.M. Springer 1950s time-stretcher |
Description |
NEW REDUCED PRICE!
This is one of the most remarkable things we've had at VEMIA - and now we have it for a second time, as the original buyer has no option but to re-sell it, reluctantly, without having had the chance to use it. **This actual machine is believed to have been owned by the famous classical conductor and experimentalist Hermann Scherchen.**
A 1950s time-stretcher..... or rather, it's designed to change the pitch without changing the speed or the speed without changing the pitch.
While that can be done digitally nowadays, there are presumably benefits and side-effects of doing it in the analogue domain which could make this very interesting indeed.
We haven't had it working - it needs to be linked up with a 30 inch/second quarter-inch tape machine - but you can imagine what would happen to phase and pitch if you were tweaking the massive Bakelite speed knob in real time.
Mechanically it seems to be in good working order. It obviously has very powerful motors (two, we believe), so it makes a bit of noise; but it seems to work correctly. The secret is in a clever design of four rotating heads, which are exactly designed to play back sound with no gap, as the tape wraps round more than one at once.
It comes with three different add-on tape transport systems - presumably for different tape machines - and has adjustable legs to cater for different deck heights.
It seems to have at least two modes - one for altering speed without pitch, and one for altering pitch without speed; and can also be used in its 'information-changer' mode to 'imitate well-known voices of persons living or dead' (especially used with a filter bank).
It will come with a copy of the four-side description of the device by A.M. Springer. It is sold as is, untested apart from successful switch-on.
Manufactured by Telefonbau und Normalzeit G.m.b.H. Frankfurt a. M.. There's a downloadable (charged!) PDF about devices like this at the AES: http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=1158
