 Make Ems
 Model Synthi AKS
Description One of the twenty lots with a start bid of £20 including VAT. Not just any old battered mostly-working Synthi AKS, either: a very very nice condition machine. Near-mint is not an exaggeration. NB Here is a revised description with input from Lucid Sounds, who have had more recent experience of these instruments than anyone except Robin Wood at EMS, and who know where to look to spot any imperfections! The case is very good, all complete, with the metalwork still reasonably shiny; and the control surface is first-class, with 99%* of the silk-screening unworn, and nearly all of it still 3D if you look closely. (* 7 of the letters round the VCF cut-off knob are worn.) This is the earlier, more beautiful 'morning mist' panel. It is in unmarked condition except for a tiny ding (3mm round) on the edge of the left speaker cutout. It has the nicer old round momentary switch, and the lovely earlier metal joystick, which is very firm and smooth in action indeed. The cap-tops are beautiful, virtually as new, but better colours than if they had been replaced. There are only a few other things which would tell you that this is not a brand-new machine: there are thin gaps in the white lines on the pin matrix where someone has scraped a pin across between holes; the remains of chinagraph around some of the matrix holes - presumably a favourite patch; a few of the pins aren't sitting completely vertical in their storage locations; there is a a small piece of the black plastic surround missing near the join at the top; and the little plastic bit that sits in the meter and transfers calibration adjustments to the metal is missing. The two thumb-screws that sit in the lower hinges have been replaced with captive screws. There is a full complement of pins; in the photo, there are no green pins, but that will be remedied by Lucid Sound before the auction. It has the computer interface / Presto-patch socket. Great sparkly knob tops on the oscillator verniers! The sequencer section is virtually as new. You have to look very carefully to see any sign of age at all. I can't imagine it has been used more than about five or ten times. The cut-out for the lead is round the other way from the majority of AKS, but is clearly original. The serial number of the KS is the same as the Synthi. When we collected it it played beautifully, without any adjustment, with no crackly knobs at all, right from the start - unusual for an old instrument. But to be certain that this really is one of the best AKS you could ever find, it has been taken to Lucid Sound in Cornwall - one of the three or four world experts in EMS products. They are making sure everything is up to factory spec and perfectly adjusted, and will provide a report. The AKS comes with its original documentation, eight-pin connecting cord, and mini-Bulgin lead. One of a huge number of lots from Tim Simenon. Tim, aka Bomb the Bass, has decided that as he wasn't using this gear it needs to be sold. He is a very careful user, as can be seen by the condition of the items he is selling. Many items are scarcely used. VEMIA went to collect all his items, have checked them personally, and will pack them expertly, free unless otherwise specified. As the items were part of his VAT registered business, 17.5% VAT needs to be added to the bid price if you are in the EC (European Community.) Outside the EC, no VAT needs to be added.
