 Make Ems
 Model VCS3 s/n 139, Cricklewood s/n 11
Description Possibly one of the best sets of EMS products available anywhere at any price in the last decade or more. These beautiful early version machines come from Cardiff University Electronic Music Studio - one of the first and biggest electronic music studios in the world, with six VCS3s and then a Synthi 100. Another of the VCS3s from the studio is the featured instrument in the Wikipedia article https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/02/EMS_VCS_3.jpg - note the exact same type of security tag and engraving (E M Studio). The Wikipedia one is s/n 143 - I think they bought six in one go from EMS. This VCS3 is s/n 139. The Cricklewood is s/n 11. Cosmetic condition is superb for instruments that are over 50 years old.

As well as looking great, they will be in perfect working order, serviced in March 2024 by Lucid. The servicing includes replacement of all noisy pots and a correct set of matrix pins sourced from Robin Wood at EMS. The pots are refurbished metal-cased AB ones, period-correct. (The photos were taken before servicing, and show some broken pins and some from the Synthi 100 - which will be entered as a separate lot this auction) Notes from Lucid after his very thorough and knowledgeable servicing: 'During the work, I identified two undocumented modifications: 1. The Keyboard Dynamic Output is hard-wired to the vertical joystick row on the matrix. It can be disabled by turning the Dynamic Level control to zero. 2. The Keyboard Oscillator is hard wired to the Signal Meter. Both of these modifications would be easy to remove if the new owner doesn’t require them. Personally I think I’d leave them in. There are two additional BNC connectors fitted to the rear panel. These function as follows: Looking from the rear, the LH jack is Gate Input, the RH jack is Input Channel 1.' Original connecting cable and mini-Bulgin mains lead included (not photo'd). Genuine EMS VCS3 cover also included. VEMIA will pack expertly: 30GBP.
