Description |
Bruel & Kjaer 2010 Heterodyne Analyzer
Cosmetically it is in lovely condition - definitely 8/10 and probably 9/10. A few little remnants of masking tape, a few marks which would probably come off with a thorough clean, but generally beautiful.
This might well be the best-specified and most fully loaded unit ever made by Bruel & Kjaer. Its frequency range is 2Hz to 200kHz, tuning can be voltage controlled, the dynamic range is greater than 85dB, it has a built-in Beat Frequency Oscillator as well as extraordinarily powerful band-pass filtering going from band-pass width of 1000Hz down to one of 3.16Hz - making the precise picking out of harmonics a piece of cake - and has a six-digit clear numeric frequency readout. It also has a well-specified compressor for automatic control
Although it is still housed in the unmistakable, gorgeous large cabinet B&K are famous for, it is transistor, not valve, and incidentally has an IEC mains socket, not the difficult-to-find earlier socket. Because of the move to transistors, there is room for such an incredible array of tools in one case - and also because the heat build-up is a lot less, the internal components are shielded with an extra metal case for improved resilience against external hum and noise sources.
Of course this was originally designed for top-quality precision analysis of speakers, motors, etc. - but even from early on, people like Stockhausen and the Radiophonic Workshop were using B&K gear to make music.
We have no idea how well calibrated this is, and haven’t checked things like the microphone inputs - specialised 7-pin B&K sockets with the necessary power connections - or the worm-drives for mechanical control of external equipment. But everything we did test seemed to be useful musically. The Oscillator output pot needs cleaning, and the last figure of the readout tends to vacillate between two digits. A copy of the 10 page Bruel & Kjaer detailed spec sheet will be included.
For music purposes, 4mm banana plugs are fine in the elaborate B&K sockets. Switchable 100 - 240V, IEC lead. Weight 22kg, size 480 x 380 x 200mm. Packing 12GBP. |
